The Euro Teams

Several nations will fancy their chances of going all the way in Germany this summer. The top six were seeded for the draw and will avoid one another in the group stage, but will we see any upsets before the knockout phase begins?

Being the tournament hosts, Germany qualified for the European Championship automatically. However, the opening game against Scotland will be their first competitive match since the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Germany are the most successful nation in Euro history, winning the tournament three times and finishing runners-up on three occasions. Spain also have three wins to their name, while Italy and France have won two Euro Cups. Overall, there have been ten different winners.

Gareth Southgate’s England were also one of the top seeds. The Three Lions head to Germany in high spirits, but the English national team have never won a European Championship. Their only major tournament success was the World Cup way back in 1966. Still, the England Euro squad will no doubt look sensational on paper, and it could be their time to shine.

France, Portugal, Spain, and Belgium were the other seeded teams in Pot 1. The best sides are there to be shot down, but all six are strong favourites to progress to the knockout stages of the competition.

Italy are the reigning European champions, but the Italians were seeded in Pot 4. The current holders have a tough group in Germany, facing Spain, Croatia, and Albania in Group B.

Netherlands, Switzerland, and Turkey are also Euro Football Teams in the 2024 edition, while Scotland have qualified again.

How Many Teams Are in Euro Football 2024?

In total, there will be 24 Euro squads in the 2024 Cup. All nations were seeded into pots, and the draw was made in December 2023. Countries were seeded by their overall European Championship qualifying rankings, so the big six will not meet in the group stage.

All 24 nations have competed in the Euro Championships before. Germany hold the record with 13 appearances, while France, Spain, England, Netherlands, Czech Republic, and Italy are all in double figures.

Scotland are making just their fourth Euro appearance, though they did also qualify for the 2020 edition. Albania and Slovenia are the least experienced nations, with just one European Championship appearance each.

Three places are still up for grabs, with the Euro Championship play-offs taking place in March. Wales are hoping to join fellow Home Nations England and Scotland in the Germany tournament.

This will be the third European Championship to have 24 teams participate. The first was in France in 2016, and the 2020 edition was also made up of 24 nations. There were just four Euro squads involved in the first-ever international European football tournament back in 1960, which was won by Soviet Union.

The Teams’ Journey From the Qualifiers to the Euro Championship

Germany are the only nation out of the 24 Euro football teams that did not qualify for the competition. With the European Championships in 2024 taking place on German soil, Julian Nagelsmann’s men were given an automatic spot.

Belgium, France, Portugal, Spain, Turkey, England, Hungary, Albania, Denmark, and Romania won the groups and automatically booked their places in the finals. The top two of every group went straight through.

There were six unbeaten nations in qualifying, including England. Southgate’s side were dominant in a tricky group, beating Italy to the top position with six wins and two draws. Portugal, Romania, Hungary, Belgium, and France also went through with an undefeated record.

Portugal, the 2016 winners, were the only nation to win every qualifier. Inspired by the evergreen Cristiano Ronaldo, who netted ten qualifying goals, the Portuguese won ten out of ten in Group J, scoring a staggering 36 goals in the process.

Scotland secured their spot in back-to-back Euro Championships by finishing runners-up in Group A. The Scots had a memorable campaign, beating Spain along the way. They missed out on the top spot in the end, but Scotland won five of eight and suffered just one defeat. Manchester United’s Scott McTominay was the hero, scoring seven qualifying goals.

Wales never recovered from a slow start and missed out on the top two in qualifying Group D. They pushed to the end but had to settle for third, behind Turkey and Croatia. Still, the Dragons can make amends in the play-offs. In March, 12 nations will compete in the play-offs for the three remaining places.

Italy left it late to book their spot on the plane to Germany. They finished level on points with Ukraine in England’s group, claiming the runners-up position on head-to-head points.

Both Romania and Hungary had fine qualifying campaigns. They may be among the weakest of the Euro squads, but both countries deserve their places in the 2024 European Championships.
