SpainParticipating Teams in the Euro Football 2024 Tournament

Spain are gearing up for the 2024 European Championship finals this summer, and La Roja are one of the teams to watch out for in Germany. With a wonderful footballing history and a squad packed full of top players, can Spain go all the way this year?

We check out their potential squad for the finals, look back on how they qualified for the tournament, and examine their expected performances. Stay tuned as we take a closer look at Spain and their chances of lifting the 2024 Euro Cup.

The Spanish Football Team in the Euro Football Tournament

The European Championship in 2024 will be Spain’s 12th appearance in the Euro finals. They have one of the best records in the competition, winning it three times. No team have won more Euro Cups than the Spaniards.

They had a couple of hairy moments along the way, but La Roja eased to the top spot in qualifying Group A. They were pushed by an in-form Scotland, but Steve Clarke’s troops ran out of steam in the end, allowing La Roja to claim first place.

Spain have been European champions three times. They withdrew from the first edition in France in 1960 but competed on home soil four years later. After a 2-1 victory against Hungary in Madrid, Spain returned to the capital for the final and edged past Soviet Union. Chus Pereda and Marcelino Martinez got the goals.

They had to wait 44 years for their next Euro Cup success. In Austria and Switzerland in 2008, Spain went all the way to the final, seeing off the likes of Russia, Sweden, and Italy along the way.

Germany were waiting in the Vienna final, and Spain secured a narrow victory to take the crown. Fernando Torres scored in the 33rd minute at the Ernst-Happel-Stadion to give the Spaniards a 1-0 win.

Spain then became the first team to win two successive European Championships when they prevailed in Poland and Ukraine in 2012. In doing so, La Roja also went level with Germany on three tournament victories.

Spain won Group C ahead of Italy, Croatia, and Republic of Ireland. They beat France in the quarter-finals and got the better of Portugal in the semi in Donetsk. They made light work of the Italians in the final, with David Silva, Jordi Alba, Fernando Torres, and Juan Mata all on target in the 4-0 rout in Kyiv.

Spain will become the record winners if they come out on top in Germany this summer. They were seeded in Pot 1 in the draw alongside Germany, France, England, Belgium, and Portugal.

Spain were drawn into Group B, which is being called the “Group of Death” in the 2024 European Championship. Luis de la Fuente’s troops will go up against Italy, Croatia, and Albania.

Croatia’s record in Euro Championships has not been great, but the Blazers have been World Cup semi-finalists in the last two editions. They finished second in Russia in 2018 and took third spot in Qatar in 2022.

As for Italy, they are one of the strongest European football nations. The Italians head to Germany as the defending champions after their Euro Cup 2020 success. Gli Azzurri went all the way, beating England on penalties at Wembley Stadium in the final.

The battle for the top two automatic places will be fascinating in Group B. Albania are expected to finish bottom, but the order of the top three is anyone’s guess.

Spain kick off their 2024 tournament with a matchup against Croatia in the Olympiastadion on June 15th. La Roja will be hoping to be back in Berlin a month later for the 2024 final.

On June 20th, Spain are involved in one of the most eye-catching group matches of the 2024 European Championship. De la Fuente takes his side to Arena AufSchalke in Gelsenkirchen to face the current holders.

If Spain can collect two positive results from their opening matches, they could already be through ahead of their final Group B match. Nevertheless, De la Fuente will be looking for all three points when Spain go head-to-head with Albania at the Red Bull Arena in Leipzig on June 24th

The Spanish side are looking to win Group B, and they will face one of the best third-place teams if they do so. The Round of 16 match would take place in Stuttgart. If they are runners-up in the group, the Spaniards will play the runners-up in Group A in Berlin.

Spain’s Road to the European Championship 2024

Spain were involved in a thrilling battle with Scotland for the top spot in their qualifying group. The Spaniards were the overwhelming favourites to win Group A before a ball was kicked, but the Scots certainly kept them on their toes.

Spain started qualifying with a routine 3-0 home win against Norway. The Norwegians were without Erling Haaland, and a Joselu brace and an early effort from Dani Olmo gave the Spaniards the points at La Rosaleda in Malaga.

La Roja then suffered a real setback on matchday two, losing to Scotland at Hampden Park. Manchester United’s Scott McTominay was the hero for the Scots, getting both goals in a shock 2-0 Scotland victory.

However, Spain bounced back in style, going on to win the next six to finish up with 21 points. They started with a 7-1 win in Georgia, with the excellent Alvaro Morata scoring a treble in Tbilisi.

Spain then hammered Cyprus 6-0 in Granada before beating Scotland 2-0 in Seville. They then won 1-0 in Norway, which put them safely through to the finals.

With the job already completed, Spain could have taken their foot off the gas. However, that was not the case, as they ended their qualifying campaign with back-to-back 3-1 wins against Cyprus and Georgia.

Spain dropped just three points in the entire qualification campaign. They scored 25 goals in eight games, shipping just five at the other end. Joselu and Alvaro Morata were their top scorers, both netting four goals apiece. Scott McTominay was the group’s top scorer with seven, while Erling Haaland scored six.

Spain’s Star Players in the Team

Spain will take a strong squad to the European Championship finals. Boss De la Fuente has a huge pool of talent to choose from, and the Spanish are among the tournament favourites.

The squad is already starting to take shape, and there are several guaranteed names on the plane if they stay fit before jetting off. Manchester City’s Rodri, who scored the winning goal in the 2023 Champions League final, will be the first name on the team sheet.

Rodri has been in sensational form since making the switch to Manchester, helping Man City win the Champions League, FA Cup, and Premier League last term. Rodri will play an integral role in the heart of Spain’s midfield in the 2024 Euro Cup.

The brilliant Barcelona duo of Lamine Yamal and Gavi will also have huge parts to play in Germany, while the experienced heads of Dani Carvajal and Alvaro Morata will be invaluable this summer.

After taking the captain’s armband, Morata has been given a new lease of life in Spain’s lineup. He scored four goals during qualifying and has been in great form for Atletico Madrid this term.

Ferran Torres could be another man to watch out for on German soil. Things may not have worked out for the Foios-born ace at Man City, but he has had memorable moments in a Barcelona shirt since heading for Catalonia.

Spain have plenty of attacking options, and their defence also looks solid on paper. They have three top goalkeepers to call upon in the shape of Alex Remiro, David Raya, and Unai Simon. The likes of Pau Torres, Jose Gaya, and David Garcia are also strong options at the back.

Spain’s Chances of Winning the 2024 European Championship

All six top seeds, including Spain, are capable of winning the European Championship this summer. If the Spaniards can navigate out of a tricky group, they will fancy their chances of going all the way.

England and France are the two outright favourites, but Spain are not too far behind. They were disappointing in the World Cup in 2022, but can they bounce back with a strong showing in this summer’s Euro tournament?

Spain are looking to get off to a winning start when they face Croatia in game one in Berlin on June 15th. If they can get three points against the Croatians, De la Fuente and his men will go into the Italy match in full confidence. You can bet on all three of Spain’s group games with us at Unibet. We offer competitive odds and have a vast Euro betting market.

In truth, Spain should secure a top-two finish in Group B, but the real tests will come in the knockout phase. However, no team will enjoy playing Spain in the knockouts, and La Roja are gunning for a fourth European Championship triumph this summer.
