How Euro groups work

The Euro groups this summer work slightly different to previous tournaments because there are now 24 teams competing, just like in 2016 when the competition expanded. Now, while the top two teams in each group still advance to the knockout stage, so do the four best third-placed teams. It means that by the end of the group stage only eight teams will be eliminated from the competition!

Each team plays three group games. There are three points for a win, one for a draw and none for a defeat. If teams are level on points at the end of the group stage, whichever won their match between the relevant tied teams will progress. If that game was a draw, then goal difference will decide the team to advance.

Euros group games will be played in 12 cities around the continent. Some teams face long flights to St Petersburg and Baku for their games, while others will be able to play in their home country. For example, England, Scotland, Denmark and Italy all have games scheduled in their home nations .

Once the group stage is finished, 16 teams will advance to the knockout stage. The fixtures have already been allocated, so the winner of Group A, for example, will face the runner-up of Group B. Once the last-16 stage is complete, the eight quarter-finalists will compete for a chance to make it to the semi-finals in London.
